Planning rice for a group

Start with a portion size you know, then adjust for the meal you want to serve.

Choose a starting portion

A calculator can multiply a portion by the number of guests. It cannot know your guests’ appetites. Start with the dry rice amount that works in your own kitchen for a similar meal. Without a baseline, treat the tool’s starting value as a provisional assumption and check it against the recipe or cook you are using.

Keep dry weight and cooked weight separate. Dry rice is a shopping quantity. The final cooked dish also contains water and other ingredients. Our planner works only with dry rice; it does not predict cooked yield or the capacity of your pot.

Add a deliberate buffer

A buffer is an allowance for uncertainty, an extra guest or leftovers you intentionally want. Apply it once, rather than repeatedly at each step. Our planner applies the buffer to the rice total; the protein total follows from that buffered weight.

For example, 10 guests at your chosen 80 g per guest require 800 g of dry rice before a buffer. A 10% buffer adds 80 g, giving 880 g. At a protein-to-rice weight ratio of 1.5, the associated protein shopping weight is 1,320 g. Every assumption is editable.

Consider the rest of the menu

A meal with several substantial sides may need a different portion from a meal centered on biryani. Children, second helpings and leftovers also matter. Change the grams-per-guest input to fit the meal instead of treating a default as a universal serving rule.

The protein ratio is a shopping convenience. Bone-in meat, boneless meat and vegetables do not have interchangeable usable weights. Choose a ratio from the recipe you intend to cook. The calculator does not determine whether that recipe is balanced or suitable.

Check before you shop

If a pack contains more than you need, the difference is pantry stock, not an instruction to use the whole pack. Keep a note of the portions you actually serve. That gives your next plan a better baseline than a generic estimate.
